We Go the Extra Mile for Your Hardwood Floors

Finishing floors is a complex, multi-step process, and a lot can go wrong. At Cutting Edge Hardwood Flooring, we avoid common mistakes by going the extra mile and paying close attention to the details. Our thoroughness is how we prevent imperfections and unsightly spots in the finished product. We meticulously prepare every floor before we stain it and take extra precautions to ensure the floor accepts a uniform, smooth stain. Our team uses many sanding techniques, but it’s the additional steps that deliver results:

Detail Sanding With the Epoch

Once we thoroughly prepare the floors with the straight and circular sanders, we make another pass with this machine. It uses a fine paper to remove small sanding marks that only display when the pigments from the staining hit the floor. It is also designed to flatten your floors, leaving a gorgeous smooth level surface.

Fine Detail Sanding

Next, we start the fine sanding stage. We use a special planetary sander called an EPOCH. The sandpaper used in Step 2 is rough so a finer sandpaper sequence is needed to remove those scratches and completely smooth the floor out.

Handheld Random Orbital Sanders

We get on our hands and knees and sand the corners and edges of the floors with an orbital sander. The EPOCH sander is too large to handle some of the finer details, and this extra step ensures a smooth finish.

Isolate the Area

You don’t want to get stain over your carpets, tile or linoleum floors. So we take special care to tape off all the transitions and fireplace hearths to prevent any damage. We also take great care when staining around wood work. We don’t tape up baseboards though because stain can seep up the tape and make things a lot worse.

Water Popping

Water popping allows the stain to take more evenly across your floors. After a floor is water-popped, it is extremely delicate. We take great caution when moving around on an open grained floor. Any little scuff mark made from a misplaced shoe movement will result in a miscolored area on the floor and thus in need of a complete re-sand.

Patience

We wait up to 12 hours before we start staining to allow the floor to completely dry. We then apply the stain with a buffer and hand apply the edges with rags.
